Sloppy Joes is a quick and easy meal that can easily feed the entire family and leave enough for leftovers.

The name “sloppy” says it all as you might need a fork to eat this amazing sloppy sandwich. To make it even sloppier, I like to add a slice of American cheese on top of my sloppy joe sandwich. Trust me, you will thank me later!

Since we always have a freezer full of deer meat on hand, I like to incorporate deer meat into any recipe that calls for ground meat. For this sloppy joes recipe I used half ground deer and half ground beef (73% lean).

Let’s get started! Here’s what you’ll need…

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1 green bell peppers, diced
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 ½ lbs. ground meat
  • 1 tsp. Cajun seasoning
  • ½ tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 2 tsp. chili powder
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 1 ½ cups ketchup
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 packs of small hamburger buns
  • American cheese slices (optional)
  • 2 jalapeno peppers, sliced (optional)

Instructions:

1. In a large deep skillet or Dutch oven pot, sauté onions, bell pepper, and garlic in butter over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, until soft.

2. Add ground meat, Cajun seasoning, and cook until ground meat is cooked all the way through and no longer pink. Since I’m using a combination of ground deer and beef I mixed the two together with a meat masher before adding to the skillet.

3. Add red pepper flakes, dry mustard, chili powder, and brown sugar. Stir until well combined.

4. Add tomato paste, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and water. Stir until well combined.

5. Cover and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes.

6. Spoon meat mixture over hamburger buns, top with a slice of American cheese and sliced jalapeno peppers, and serve hot with a side of salty potato chips! Enjoy!
